ABSTRACT

Abstract Trichofolliculoma is an infrequent benign tumor of the hair follicle, with a higher prevalence between the second and sixth decade of life. It usually presents as a solitary lesion in the form of a nodule, papules or asymptomatic skin-colored plaques with a pore or central cavity obstructed with keratin from which a "tuft of hairs" emerges. The most frequent location is usually the face, followed by the scalp and neck.1 Histopathological characteristics are diagnostic. We report a case of a 44-year-old man with multiple trichofolliculomas on his face.

ABSTRACT

Hair follicle nevus (HFN) is a rare, benign, follicular hamartoma that most frequently presents as a congenital nodule on the face. We experienced a rare case of HFN on the neck of a 14-year-old boy and performed a pilot immunohistochemical study with cytokeratin 19 (CK19) to compare the staining pattern of hair follicles in HFN and its differential diagnoses, accessory tragus, cervical chondrocutaneous branchial remnants (CCBR) and trichofolliculoma. With hematoxylin and eosin stain, HFN showed numerous tiny hair follicles in the dermis with several sebaceous and eccrine glands, and perifollicular fibrous thickening. With CK19 stain, some hair follicles in HFN and CCBR showed positive expression, a few hair follicles in accessory tragus showed weak expression, and no hair follicles in trichofolliculoma showed expression. The present report supports the view that HFN, accessory tragus and CCBR are within the same spectrum of hamartomas.

ABSTRACT

Trichofolliculoma is an uncommon follicular hamartoma of hair follicle tissue, typically occurring on the face and skin of the head and neck and appearing as papules or nodules. Dents in the central portion and immature white hair may be observed. Asymptomatically, trichofolliculoma occurs at any age but rather frequently in adults in many cases. A 47-year-old man presented a right ear canal mass, which had not been treated for 12 years. The tumor began to increase its size 4 years ago. A little red bump blocked the entrance of the right external auditory canal and there was a little dinge at the center of bump with growing black hair. This case was first reported in our country. Thus, we report this rare case with a review of the literature.

ABSTRACT

Trichofolliculoma is a hamartoma with follicular differentiation. It is a rare benign tumor that presents mainly in adults, between second and sixth decades of life, which mainly affects the face and neck. Most cases reported in the literature are derived from adult patients, making its suspicion rare in children; despite being recognized by their clinical characteristics, a proper diagnosis can only be established after histopathologic evaluation. We report a case of an 8 year old boy with a 7 year evolution of trichofolliculoma in scalp with a satisfactory response to surgery without recurrence to date.

ABSTRACT

Sebaceous trichofolliculoma is a rare benign tumor and represents a variant of trichofolliculoma. Up to now, only 5 cases of sebaceous trichofolliculoma were reported in Korea. It generally presents as a centrally depressed solitary tumor and occurs in areas rich in sebaceous lobules. Microscopically, it shows cystic cavities with or without keratin-filled portion and sebaceous lobules. The lobules are connected to the cystic wall. We report a case of infected sebaceous trichofolliculoma on the right cheek accompanied by a unilateral microtia in a 16-year-old man. The patient was treated with oral antibiotics and surgical excision. By summariz-ing 12 past cases, 6 Korean and 7 international, we have put together clinical features of Se-baceous trichofolliculoma.

ABSTRACT

Folliculosebaceous cystic hamartoma (FSCH) is a rare cutaneous hamartoma composed of dilated folliculosebaceous units and mesenchymal elements. It presents as a papule or nodule usually on the face and scalp, rarely on the genital or trunk area. Histologically, FSCH shares several similar features to sebaceous trichofolliculoma. We report one case of FSCH misdiagnosed as a neurofibroma. He was a 38-year-old man with a neurofibromatosis type I and a nodule on his left earlobe was excised under the impression of neurofibroma. Pathological examination revealed FSCH. Although FSCH is clinically not distinctive, awareness of the lesion is important to differentiate papulonodular or cyst-like cutaneous lesions.

ABSTRACT

Trichofolliculoma is a rare skin lesion. It is an adnexal tumor of hair follicles, which was first described by Miescher. Trichofolliculoma is a hamartomatous lesion of hair follicle origin, intermediate in differentiation between a hair follicle nevus and trichoepithelioma as classified by Kligman and Pinkus. It usually manifests clinically as a small, slowly growing, well-demarcated, flesh-colored papule on head and neck. The diagnosis is difficult clinically and is based mainly on histopatholigic appearance. It is commonly misdiagnosed as sebaceous cyst, nevus, and basal cell carcinoma. Treatment is by simple excision and recurrence is rare. We report a case of trichofolliculoma of nasal vestibule with a review of literature.

ABSTRACT

Sebaceous trichofolliculoma, which is a variant of trichofolliculoma, is a rare disease that clinically show a centrally depressed lesion usually singly on the nose, and histologically a centrally located cavity, lined by squamous epithelium, with numerous sebaceous lobules connected to them. We describe a case of sebaceous trichofolliculoma in a 27-year-old woman who had several brown papules on the nose. We think that this is the first report of sebaceous trichofolliculloma in Korean literature.

ABSTRACT

Trichofolliculoma is a benign, highly structured adenoma of the pilosebaceous unit, usually occuring on the face or scalp as 0.5 to 1.0 cm solitary papule in persons past middle age. This benign neoplasm rarely occurs prior to early adult life or neonate. We report a case of congenital trichofolliculoma in a 13-year-old girl who had had a single asymptomatic mass on the posterior aspect of right auricle since birth.

ABSTRACT

Trichogenic tumors are a very rare group of primary cutaneous neoplasms and a few tumors have been recognized. Trichofolliculoma is a benign, papular, organoid adnexal tumor of the skin and presents as a solitary skin-colored nodule. We report six cases of trichofolliculoma occurred in Korean patients consisting of three male and three female patients. The duration of disease was variable from 3 months to 5 years. The site of tumor was limited to the face and included eyelid in two cases, nose in two cases, cheek and posterior aspect of ear in each one case. The size of the mass varied from 4 to 8 mm in diameter. Microscopically, all the cases showed large central cystic hair follicle with numerous secondary follicular buds, producing a radiating pattern. The stroma was fibrotic and well demarcated from the adjacent dermis.

ABSTRACT

Sebaceous trichofolliculoma is a variant of trichofolliculoma which occurs in the sebaceous areas rich in follicles and is a relatively rare skin tumor. This tumor is a clinically and histologically easy tumor to recognize that is well differentiated. We examined a case of a consists of a 21-year-old female who had a pedunculated nodule on her scalp. Microscopically, the tumor was large, had a centrally located cavity lined by squamous epithelium and radially arranged sebaceous follicles connected to the cavity. No cytological atypia or recurrence after excision was found.

ABSTRACT

The trichofolliculoma is a rare tumor of the hair follicle occuring most often on the head and neck. We have experienced a case of 24-year-old female who had a small, dome-shaped, tan brown firm nodule on the nose. Under the clinical impression of a granuloma, an excisional biopsy of the nodule was done. Microscopically the lesion was composed of a large central cystic hair follicle with many srhall but well differenciated secondary hair follicles branching from the wall. Well developed secondary hair follicles were often grouped and were surrounded by a prominent stroma.

ABSTRACT

Trichofolliculoma is an adnexal tumor of hair follicle oriyin, considered to be of intermediate differentiation between a hair follicle nevus, a simple hyperolasia of the hair follicle, and trichoepithelioma, Which usually lacks mature hair follicles. Grossly the tumor usually appears on the head or neck as a 0.5 to 1.0cm solitary white to pearly papule, Many lesions show a cental pore, and occasionally woolly or cottony hairs may protrude from this pore. Histologically, trichofolliculomas are characterized by a central dilated follicle filled with keratin or hair. Radiating from this primary hair follicle are numerous secndary hair follicles of varying degrees of maturation. An organized fibro-vascular stroma surrounds these epithelial structure, giving it a well-defined nodular appearance. We presented here two case of trichofolliculoma with typical clnical and histopathological findings, one in a 65 year-old female and the other a 56 year-old males.
